Real Men Giving Real Time®
MENTORING is the cornerstone of what the organization brings to the community--guiding youth in life experiences, fostering a positive self-perception and self-respect, encouraging excellence in education, and pursuing positive life-long goals. Each national and international chapter is engaged in innovative mentoring programs that serve the unique needs of their local community.
Through our mentoring programs, we promote improving social skills, academic achievement, and positive behavior. When our mentees are faced with difficult issues and challenging situations our mentors are there to provide feedback and give support and guidance. We want all mentees to understand they alone control their destiny. Therefore, the mentoring program provides mentees with the skills and confidence of self-advocacy along with a strong emphasis on academics and occupational skills.
Our initial mentoring program began in September 2000 at Wendell P. Williams Elementary School (formerly Madison Elementary School). We still mentor there today. We also have active mentoring programs at Jo Mackey Elementary School as well as at the 100 Academy of Excellence. Our target age groups, for these programs, are 3rd - 5th graders. The outline that we use for mentoring is, "Mentoring the 100 Way". The same outline is used in all our mentoring programs.
- At the elementary schools, mentoring is a nine-month curriculum that tracks along with the school year. Mentoring sessions are once a week at each location.
Each year, we also sponsor 2-3 teams in the city baseball league. The teams primarily are made up of kids who participate in our mentoring program from the various schools. With the help of a key sponsor, MGM Mirage, we pay all registration fees, league fees and purchase each kid a glove and cleats.
- We use baseball as another opportunity and method to mentor to the kids. Mentoring sessions are held 3-4 times a week on the baseball field.
Recently we extended our mentoring initiative by establishing a Saturday Mentoring Program for Junior High and High School students.
- The Saturday Mentoring Program is a year round program and it follows the same mentoring outline as the other programs. We meet weekly at the William U. Pearson Community Center.
We provide mentoring to over 100 youth per year and continually strive to provide examples of positive role models for our kids to see.
